My control. Control of what I say. And control of what I do. And this time I'm gonna do it my way.

This week we kick off Month 3 of our challenge. When deciding on the word of the month, one of our 5K Fin-Physiquers suggested the word: CONTROL. What a powerful word and perfectly timed for this juncture in our journey.

As I thought of the word control, there's a song that kept popping up in my head. If you haven't guessed the song, the words of this article and sub-title are the prelude to the song. Still having problems guessing? Well, it's Control by Janet Jackson.

The song illustrates a common theme most of us have faced during our youth and continue to face even decades later. We have allowed ourselves to be controlled by the opinions and standards of our parents, family, friends, jobs, and society as a whole. In doing so, we have lost our identity and ourselves in the process.

It's no wonder why we struggle with self-control. How could we not, when someone else has held the reins for decades. Have you ever wondered why it's so hard to make even the smallest of change to better ourselves? To grow? To take a leap of faith? To walk away from a bad job, relationship, or situation? To take control of your life? It's due to the safety and security of being controlled. Sounds kinda strange, right. I'll put it a different way. We fear losing the love, respect, and comfort that being controlled provides. We fear the disappointment and disapproval of society and those we love. So we continue to give their opinions more value than life itself. Read that last sentence again.

"Got my own mind. I want to make my own decisions. When it has to do with my life, my life. I wanna be the one in control." - Control by Janet Jackson

So now it's time to take back the reins and take control. Take control of your life, your decisions, your finances, your fitness, and your relationships. It won't be easy. It will actually be scary. But in less than a year a baby goes from barely having the ability to hold their head to running across the living room. In probably a few short months, you learned to drive and with that took on the responsibility of the lives of those in your car and on the road. You've taken control before when you wanted to, so you already have it within you. Take control and never look back.

"If you learn self-control, you can MASTER anything."
